Soon after she moved to the London borough of Hampstead, Sylvia Sleigh created this self-portrait. At the time, she was 25 or 26 years old. Behind her is a window with a glimpse of the rusticated masonry of a nearby building and the verdant foliage of a tree. The textures of Sleigh’s blouse, plaid jacket, and loosely curling hair were partially achieved by scraping the end of a brush into the wet paint.
